Run for wildlife at Penzance

Keen runners and charity fundraisers should be dusting off their trainers and digging out the running shorts ahead of this year’s Race for Wildlife in Penzance.

The ten-kilometre race follows the success of last year’s event and once again raises money for the Cornwall Wildlife Trust.

For those who prefer a gentler pace there is a one-mile fun run. Both races take place at on Sunday, October 14. Race headquarters for the 10k is Mounts Bay School at Heamoor, or Trengwainton Gardens for the fun run.

The closing date for pre-entries is October 5, although runners can still enter on the day.

Dania Shaw from Cornwall Wildlife Trust, which protects Cornwall’s wildlife and wild places, said: “We encourage anyone who cares for Cornwall's wildlife to take part in our Race for Wildlife. Whether you'll be running the 10k, enjoying a gentle jog in the fun run or helping us marshal the event, we want to see you there.”

The run is now an official event in the Cornish Multi-Terrain Grand Prix Series co-ordinated by Cornwall Road Running and Racing Group. People do not need to be part of a running club to take part, however, with all abilities welcome.

It has been organised by the Cornwall Wildlife Trust in conjunction with local running club Mounts Bay Harriers.

The 10k race starts at 10.30am, taking in the countryside north of Penzance and views of Mounts Bay and St Michael’s Mount.

The route includes 2.4km (1.5 miles) off-road on tracks and uneven stony ground, with the remainder on-road. The first half of the run is uphill (just under 5km / 3 miles), the last half is downhill (just under 5km / 3 miles), with the end going uphill to the finish (0.3km / 0.2 mile).

Pre-entry for the 10k is £12 or £10 for UK Athletics members, with entries on the day at £14 and £12 respectively. Competitors needs to be 15 years or over on race day to take part in the 10k.

The fun run – at which wildlife fancy dress is encouraged – starts at 9.45am and follows a route around the country tracks and paths of Trengwainton Gardens by kind permission of The National Trust.

Pre-entry for the fun run is £4, or on the day entry for £5 and there is a certificate for all who finish.

To enter the Race for Wildlife visit www.raceforwildlife.org.uk or call the Trust’s office on 01872 273939 for an entry form. The Race for Wildlife is licensed under UK Athletics, licence number: 2012-104442.

The fun run and 10k need marshals to guide runners along the route. Contact Carolyn O’Hagan on raceforwildlife@cornwallwildlifetrust.org.uk or call 01872 273939. No previous marshalling experience is necessary as all training will be given on the day.
