Group fighting housing plans to take argument to Cornwall Council

A group set up to fight plans to build tens of thousands of homes in Cornwall over the next 20 years will be taking their argument to the corridors of power on Thursday, September 27 at noon.
Our Cornwall is concerned about the "Core Strategy" which they say is a proposal to build in excess of 48,000 houses over the next 20 years, leading to “a million people in Cornwall by the end of this century”, a large amount of which will be to support inward migration from other parts of the UK.
A spokesman for the group said the letter has currently signed by more than 43 Cornish organizations, adding: “It is vitally important that as many people attend the Our Cornwall launch to show Cornwall Council and its members that we oppose the prospects of a Cornwall with double the present population, a scenario which current policies will inevitably produce."
The group says the proposals will lead to “massive estates on green field sites, soulless car-dependent suburbs, more traffic congestion, more pollution, declining town centres, irreversible environmental damage and significant loss of increasingly valuable agricultural land”.
Our Cornwall will visit County Hall to hand over an open letter calling for an end to the “deliberate encouragement of population growth” and demanding a “sustainable alternative to relentless housing development”. The event will take place outside the main entrance to County Hall, at noon.
The group is also asking members of the public to write to their Cornwall councillor, to make them aware of their views.
The spokesman said: “Our Cornwall intends to make the issue an important point when it comes to council elections next year, and we need to know where people seeking election stand on this issue, probably the most important one facing Cornwall at this time.”
He added they want people to ask their councillors for a “clear, unambiguous reply stating the councillor’s position on Cornwall Council’s current housing target.”
