‘Ten days ago we thought we had lost him – and now he’s talking about starting playing again’.
That was the reaction of Falmouth Town’s director of football Steve Kimberley after the astonishing recovery of teenage striker Rob Wearne.
Rob was playing for the club on his 19th birthday a week last Saturday when he was involved in a horrific clash of heads with the opposition goalkeeper.
He was left lying unconscious on the field for 30 minutes with a fractured skull, before being rushed to hospital by ambulance, where he was put into a medically induced coma while doctors assessed his injuries.
He underwent emergency surgery three days later, and as soon as he came round afterwards, was able to smile and stick his thumbs up to his relieved parents. Now he is already looking forward to resuming playing. Mr Kimberley said: “A few of us from the club travelled up to see Rob on Saturday and found him in fine spirits, sitting up in bed and watching the football scores on the TV.
“He has stitches on his head like you have never seen before, but he was in remarkably fine form.
“He is now home with his parents, which is great because he was going stir crazy in the hospital.
“He is already talking about coming along to our home game next Tuesday, and I am sure he will get a hero’s reception from everybody if he makes it.
“He is already talking about wanting to resume light training before Christmas, and I would not mind betting that we see him back playing properly before the end of the season.
“His recovery is amazing, ten days ago we thought we had lost him, and now he’s talking about starting playing again.”
