'Yellow lines will force people away'

Double yellow lines painted on the road leading to Mylor Harbour last week will force young sportsmen and women to find new clubs away from the area.

That is the warning from Anne Oliver, chairman of Nankersey Rowing Club, which is based at the harbour.

She has been leading the fight against the introduction of the yellow lines, which the council say are needed to stop traffic problems on Penarrow Hill during busy periods.

Mrs Oliver said: “I would like to say that neither Cornwall Council or the Parish Council have listened to the users of the hill, most of whom live in the parish and who have certainly had a hand in voting for those |sitting on the PC.

“As the chairman of Nankersey Rowing Club, whose members use the hill, I am saddened that our club members will now have to pay to use our pilot gigs. Yes we have been offered parking permits by Mylor Yacht Harbour, but we are not rich boat owners, many of our members are students and on low incomes.

“Additional costs to use the waters of Carrick roads is not an option. Both our club and Restgronguet sailing club are worried that these additional costs may well result in loss of members.

“This is an issue of access to waters, which we are now being denied unless we pay to park.

“The park in the summer is often full and the hill can cater for the overflow. If our members come to row and find the park full, what do we do? Go home?

Matt Povey, from Cafe Mylor, said: “When the car park’s full there is nowhere for people to park. The double yellow lines will definitely have an impact on business.”

If they have been offered parking permits then there must be available parking. Therefore it would appear the real argument is against paying to park rather than available parking space. If one was on a very low income then one would not be able to afford to run a car unless someone else covered the costs. Surely safety on the road should be a priority.

2 vehicles with their trailers have already ignored the yellow lines and parked there today I noticed. Will there be any body around to issue fines if this continues? The lines are there for a good reason - when people park there with or without trailers, it is very difficult for cars to pass one another and usually there is a tussle as to who will give way. On busy times a field is offered for more parking. I really cannot see that the yellow lines are going to cause any problems to the gig rowers or have any impact on the businesses.

Having traveled up and down this road all summer I have seen no problems and only small holdups. The real problem for parking is opposite the Texaco garage in Penryn. There I've sat and stewed for ages and witness an emergency vehicle waiting for idiots to give way. That should have lines not a no through road which is quiet most of the week

I see that Anne Oliver is on her soap-box again. Personally her continued tirade against these lines is getting boring now.

I'm guessing that these lines were put down after requests from the local residents, and after a survey from the highways team. So what is the problem ?

I know the road well, and yes it gets busy in the summer, but I have also witnessed accidents along this road, where inconsiderate drivers have parked along the verge, leaving vehicles to squeeze past.

I whole heartedly agreed with the lines, and hope that they are enforced regularly & fairly. There is a perfectly good car park in the harbour, and the Rowing Club have been offered permits/spaces there ...

And, no I don't live along this road, but walk along it frequently.

Well done Cornwall Council - a good decision, now please enforce these lines. A few tickets might actually drive the message home now !
