Burst boiling water pipe at Royal Cornwall Hospital

Firefighters were called out to the Royal Cornwall Hospital this morning after a burst boiling water pipe in a basement plant room set the alarms off.

The alarms started sounding shortly before 5am in the tower block basement part of the complex and two appliances carrying twelve fire fighters were mobilised along with an appliance with six firefighters from Redruth.

On their arrival crews found the steam had set the alarms off and water had spread from the basement to the main hospital building.

Working with a hospital engineer, crews carried out an emergency isolation of the water supply and firefighters  used a pump to remove the water.

By 6.30hrs with the water cleared away, all fire crews returned to their home stations.
