Ice cream sellers go head to head for prime Falmouth pitch

TWO ice cream sellers went head to head against each other at Falmouth Town Council on Monday to pitch for the rights to sell their products at Pendennis Point.

Both John Caulkin and Daniel King had submitted bids for the single pitch on the same day, and councillors on the authority’s planning committee decided to ask them to address members directly in order to decide who to award the contract to.

Mr Caulkin told the committee how he already has a successful business selling ice cream at Castle Beach and on rounds in both Falmouth and Penryn.

Mr King is currently employed by another ice cream firm in town, but is due to be laid off at the end of the month.

Committee chairman Diana Merrett said: “I would like to see anyone make a start in life and begin their own business.

“There is no licensing reason to choose between them, but I feel it would be good to give Mr King the chance to make a start with his business.”

Wouldn't give either of them a license unless their ice cream is at least as good as John Martins was.
