Elderly Falmouth couple forced out of home by thefts

AN ELDERLY couple have moved from their Falmouth house after the property was burgled by a man living in supported housing next door.

The pair, in the 70s, decided to leave their Dracaena Avenue home as they could no longer face living there.

District Judge Roderick Hine, sitting at Truro Magistrates’ Court, heard how Brendon Bennett, 29, of no fixed address, stole £1,200 in cash and a ring worth £200 in the raid.

Bennett, who pleaded guilty to burglary, had spoken to the couple on the morning of the offence, which took place on Sunday, September 9.

They told him they did not have time to talk as they were going out.

He went back to his accommodation, got on the roof through a window and into next door through another window. He had previous convictions and at the time of the offence was on licence from prison.

Bennett was sent to Truro Crown Court on November 6 for sentence, and was remanded in custody.

I think this is a very sad story, some former neighbours of mine were burgled by a notorious burglar that lived opposite, I witnessed the burglary along with another neighbour, consequently I went to the crown court as a witness. Because the victims felt their home had been violated they too felt they could no longer live there and had to move. Burglary is not just about the theft but the the whole impact in can have on someones life.

Convicted burglars should be made to clean the streets, repair roads and apologise to their victims. Forget suspended sentences. Forget jail. Use them as a labour resource.
