Cornish Holiday Cottages (CHC), based in the Falmouth and the Helford area, have launched one of the very first, universally accessible state-of-the-art holiday homes in Cornwall.

Calamansac Sail Loft is a detached, open-plan property sleeping seven, nestled into a 50-acre estate, encompassing ancient woodland and stunning views of the Helford River. The property has recently undergone a complete renovation to be accessible for all.

The project is a result of a unique collaboration between the Green family, owners of the property, London Cowan Architects, Tom Earl Builders, Fran Keene Consultancy and Emily Boriosi, of CHC.

Following an increase in requests for such holiday properties online, Sail Loft at Calamansac is the perfect house for such a project given its location and surroundings. Having managed the family business for over 13 years, Emily is acutely aware of the challenges faced and worries experienced by people when staying away from home.

She said: “Research shows that many people with multiple physical needs rarely go on holiday because they’re concerned they won’t be able to cope. We want to relieve those fears and provide a high-end, contemporary holiday home, changing the face of accessibility."

For the first time in Cornwall, CHC is offering a purpose-built holiday home to guests and their families. The renovated property includes four bedrooms on the ground floor, an open-plan kitchen/dining/living area accessed via a lift, fully accessible bathrooms. The spacious interior allows for numerous wheelchair users to navigate with ease.

Architect Marisa Shek, said: “The challenge was to create a modern, homely and functional retreat for wheelchair users without shouting 'disability' and being inclusive for the rest of the family."

Emily added: “Whilst the property is not fully adapted for all types of disability, it does have excellent wheelchair access, both within the property itself and the surrounding area. Furthermore, the property has been designed to ensure highest access specs without compromising the design. I am thrilled with the result of the renovation and seeing the early bookings of the property is extremely encouraging."
