A Penryn-based pasty firm has won a PETA Vegan Food Award for its Thai green veggie pasty.

The West Cornwall Pasty Company originally produced the pasty as a limited edition "guest pasty" but it proved such a success that it secured itself a permanent place on the menu.

It has now nabbed the award for the best vegan pie in PETA's annual awards. This follows on the success of the company's wheatmeal vegetable pasty which won its first PETA award in 2013.

"The demand for delicious, cruelty-free fare is higher than ever, and forward-thinking businesses are responding with everything from animal-free meatballs to egg-free mayo," says PETA's Dawn Carr. "PETA's Vegan Food Awards honour this year's most progressive new products, including West Cornwall Pasty Co's flavoursome Thai Green Veggie Pasty."
