Porkellis Moor Rowing Club gathered together at Stithians Lake on Saturday in the presence of Right Reverend Tim Thornton, Bishop of Truro to celebrate the blessing and naming of their two Cornish Pilot Gigs.
Since the club’s inception in July last year, two boats have arrived having been purchased by private owners and being loaned to the club long term.
The first, Bal Maiden is a plastic pilot gig, used for training sessions at Stithians Lake. Porthkellys arrived a couple of months later in the guise of Catalina from Cattewater Gig Club.
With Cattewater wishing to keep the name of Catalina, she was taken to a barn, stripped, repaired and repainted in her new colours and given the new name of Porthkellys - meaning in Cornish, Hidden Beach - her new home is on Stithians Lake - 600 feet above sea level.
Bishop Tim did the honours with a lovely, simple ceremony, naming the two gigs with a generous dousing of beer from the local brewery... Porthkellys was taken out by club members for a row in the mist and rain, Bishop Tim wisely decided against joining the crew, preferring to watch from the shore with a hot cup of coffee!
