Pool hosts spectacular Armed Forces Day: PICTURES

In a celebration of the Armed Forces across Cornwall, past, present and the future came together at Heartlands Mining Heritage centre to raise public awareness of the contribution the Military has in the past and continues to give to the Nation. It was also an opportunity for the community as a whole to show its appreciation for the commitment the services have given over the years.

Royal Naval Air Station Culdrose was represented by a cross section of the Squadrons and Units that train and operate from the Fleet Air Arm's West Cornwall Base. Taking time out from the rigors of planning for future exercises and deployments, interactive and hands-on exhibits were readily accessible to all.

“We are always pleased to be able take the opportunity to show the public what we do”, said Chief Petty Officer Aircraft Handler John "Soups" Campbell. “Armed Forces day is a wonderful chance for the public to see what we do and chat with the men and women of the Fleet Air Arm at Culdrose.”

At Cornwall Armed Forces Day this year, three Operational Service Medals (OSMs) for service in Afghanistan were presented to Airmen currently stationed at RAF St Mawgan near Newquay. From RNAS Culdrose, Leading Airman Aircraft Handler Shaun Howells who lives in Helston received his Long Service and Good Conduct (LS&GC) medal from the guest of honour for the Day, Rear Admiral Sir Robert Woodard, KCVO, DL. Shaun was supported by his proud wife Danielle and their children Imogen and Ollie. The Navy's LS&GC medal is presented to Naval Service personnel who having completed over 15 years reckonable service and on their Commanding Officer's recommendation, are deemed worthy of the award and has shown the highest standards of the Service.

The fine and sunny weather brought out the crowds who were treated to a spectacular display of Flags and Standards from the British Legion, Cadets and other veteran organisations on parade.

“Today is a day of commemoration and celebration. We remember those who gave the ultimate sacrifice and those who are here celebrating with you all”, said Rear Admiral Woodard in his speech to the parade. “It's a day when the public can think about and support the armed forces of this country. It's very pleasing to see so many young people here today representing the Cadet Forces and the Culdrose Volunteer Band who are the cherry on the icing on the cake.”
