The history of Redruth and stories around the old Redruth Brewery site will be brought to life this autumn as characters parade through the town to ‘Brew up the past’.

At various times on October 11, November 8, November 29 and December 13, performers from the Cascade Theatre Company will take to the streets of the town as part of a community history project.

This has been launched to support the Kresen Kernow project to build a new archive centre for Cornwall at the former Redruth Brewery site.

The community history project aims to communicate the history of the old Brewery site, learn some of the locals’ memories and introduce the people of Redruth to the archive and library collections that will be at Kresen Kernow.

Characters ranging from larger than life street cleaners, to Ghost Story Gathering Geeks scanning for traces of the past, will share their treasure trove of tales and soak up new stories from the public as they capture memories of the area, particularly of the brewery site itself.

Carol and Kit, the directors of Cascade, said: “The whole team are really excited by this project. It is different, varied and offers so much potential for innovative work and interacting with the people of Redruth."

Another key aspect of “Brewing up the Past” is to help people look for and present the history of the area and its people. Volunteers who wish to become involved will be fully trained and will learn important skills they will be able to take forward into their own local or family history research.
