A new project to support people who have been affected by dependency to prescription medicine in Cornwall has been set up in Redruth.

The POM dependency service, or POMDS for short, is currently putting together a series of activities for people to get involved in, with the aim of supporting those affected by medicine dependency to "overcome barriers to recovery".

As part of the programme on offer people can access one to one mentoring, take part in education and training courses and get involved in peer support groups.

A particular focus is to "provide a safe and supportive space for people to engage in personal development planning and creative arts, to express their individual journey".

All activities are provided free of charge and are overseen by individuals with direct personal experience, along with experienced community and health workers.

In recent months prescription medicine dependency has made media headlines with some reports suggest that up to half of men and women in the UK are overly dependent on prescription drugs; with a fear that a large proportion of these are taking medication unnecessarily or incorrectly.
