Students from Roskear Primary School had a ‘hair-raising’ visit to Camborne Science and International Academy last week, thanks to a brush with Van de Graaff generator.

Year 4 students worked with science teacher, Ami Deacy, and sixth form science leader, Rachel Nettle, for an electrifying morning of learning on Tuesday 20th January.

“Students enjoyed an array of experiments, with the most popular activity being the generator!” said Ami Deacy. “The excitement was palpable as they felt their hair start to stand up. It’s wonderful to see how Science can enthuse young people.”

Students were challenged to make different electrical circuits including that of a doorbell, and tasked with making a light appear on a bell for people with hearing impairments.

“From static electricity to lightening strikes, the students witnessed first-hand what an exciting subject Science is” said Ami. “They were all fantastic, showing real enthusiasm and were very knowledgable.”

The workshop is part of an ongoing programme between CSIA and local primary schools, seeing regular events organised to enhance learning.

“We hope that through experiences like this one, the younger generation can be inspired by the opportunities that lie ahead” added Ian Kenworthy, principal at CSIA.
