A 34-year-old sailor from Camborne has become the third of three brothers from Camborne to be recognised for long and dedicated service in the Royal Navy.

Chief Petty Officer Tony Brown was presented with his Long Service and Good Conduct (LSGC) medal by Rear Admiral Jonathan Woodcock, the Second Sea Lord, during a parade at HMS Raleigh in Torpoint.

Among the guests watching from the stands were his parents Ken and Christine, and his elder brothers Rob and Billy, who are also Chief Petty Officers in the Royal Navy. Rob and Billy joined the Royal Navy on April 27, 1998 and at the time were believed to be the first brothers to join Fisgard Squadron, the former Artificer training division, for 80 years.

They were presented with their LSGC medals in 2013. Tony joined up in 1999 and is currently based at HMS Raleigh working alongside Rob, while Billy is on the staff of Flag Officer Sea Training in Plymouth. The three brothers are all former pupils of Camborne School.

Tony said: “Having the chance to work with one of my brothers is undoubtedly one of the highlights of my career. Although I’m proud to receive this medal, the real reward is having the opportunity to serve my country and the Royal Navy for the last 15 years. However I think today is more about the future than the past and I’m looking forward to another 15 years in the Service.”

While his two brothers opted for a career as weapons engineering specialists in the Surface Fleet, Tony is a marine engineering who has spent most of his career beneath the waves serving on three submarines, including two separate drafts to HMS Triumph.

Rob, aged 37, has served on five warships and ashore in Portsmouth and Plymouth. He is married to Louisa and has two children, Oliver, aged six, and Toby, aged two.

Rob said: “I have enjoyed my career so far and look forward to the next five years. It’s good to be here at Raleigh with my little brother and see him double his medal count.”

Middle brother Billy, aged 35, has served on three warships including two of the Royal Navy’s largest vessels, the former Aircraft Carrier HMS Invincible and HMS Albion, the amphibious assault ship. He has also served ashore in Plymouth and at Abbeywood, in Bristol.

All three brothers are keen sportsman. Tony has won the Royal Navy Judo Championships three times, while Billy has represented the Combined Services at the National Judo Team Championships, helping them to third place, the highest position they have ever held.

He also represented GB Schools at Judo and won the World Cornish Wrestling Championship. Billy now plays rugby for Veor Rugby Club and has previously played for Camborne third team. Rob claims that he is too old to play rugby now, so is restricted to watching and shouting at other people.

Billy is married to Victoria and has a 11-year-old stepson named Thomas and a daughter, Teigan who is eight months old.

He said: “Throughout my time in the Royal Navy, I have always been encouraged and fully supported when participating in sports and there are plenty of opportunities to try new sports and participate in Adventurous Training as workload permits.

"The opportunities the Royal Navy has provided us all with are second to none. I have travelled to places I never would have been too and shared fantastic experiences with some great people.”
