So many youngsters turned up to take part in the annual Easter egg hunt at Portreath beach on Sunday that organisers had to raid the local sweet shop for extra prizes.

This year's Camborne Redruth & District Lions Club event saw a sea change from last year when rain and wind kept numbers down to just over 150.

Expecting a few more due to the sunny weather on Sunday, the Lions were stunned to see over 500 turn up to the eleventh hunt.

With a plan to give every child that takes part in the hunt an Easter egg, club members were left scratching their heads over how to get enough chocolate treats.

Alan Hampton from the club said: "What a shock for us because our records indicated that 500 children turned up along with parents, grand parents and friends. Did we panic? Yes!.

"We immediately went to Bookers, the only store open and bought out their sweet stock. Sad to say we still did not have enough chocolate to supply all that took part- so we offered to give their entrance fee of £1 back.

"Some accepted our offer and some told us to keep it."

Both of the Golden Eggs were found by youngsters down on holiday. Charlie Yates comes from Bolton and Reese Edwards from Carmarthen.

Alan added: "All in all it was a good day and with the takings from our beach raffle, books and soft toy stall added to the entry fees we were able to put £800 into our charity account.
