A team of staff from Addaction Cornwall organised a sponsored bike ride in memory of a well-loved volunteer at the charity, raising more than £300.

Barry Marsh was well known at the Redruth office of the drug and alcohol treatment charity, where he dedicated many hours of his time to helping other people with their recovery.

For around two years Barry worked in groups sharing his own recovery experiences, offering others hope and ideas to support their own lives. He died in November of cancer and the Addaction team wanted to raise money for Cornwall Hospice Care, which helped Barry towards the end of his life.

The team planned and completed an 11 mile, coast to coast bike ride, starting at Devoran and finishing at Portreath. Cyclists included Katy Bird, Jenny Teagle, Rebecca Kenward, Helen Chown, Billy Houghton, Michelle Casserly, Charlie Hogan and former Addaction staff member Jen Taylor.

Katy, a recovery co-ordinator, said: “Barry was a thoughtful guy and because of where he had been in terms of his experience, he was considerate to others and shared his story to help other people.

“Because he had developed throat cancer previously, he would always say he was fine as long as he was still breathing. It was a shock to us all when he died and we are glad to do something to recognise the contribution he gave to others.”

The bike ride took place earlier this month, but you can still sponsor the team via www.cornwallhospicecare.co.uk/fundraisers/coast-to-coast-bike-ride-in-memory-of-barry-18th-april-2015.
