Lanner Primary School pupils took part in a Junior Enterprise Challenge Day organised by Cornwall Learning Education Business Partnership.

With support from Shelter Box, Tesco and the Children’s University, the pupils, aged nine and ten, formed into companies for the day to develop their fundraising ideas to raise money for Syria and ShelterBox. They had lots of ideas ranging from dog shows to a mini triathlon.

Together they produced drawings and models of their fundraising ideas as well as many leaflets, posters and even radio adverts to promote them. The pupils then presented their ideas to a team of judges and it was decided that each group will have an chance during the year to organise their event with the hope that the children will raise enough money for two ShelterBoxes.

“It is never too soon to start developing entrepreneurial skills and the Junior Enterprise Challenge provided the pupils with the opportunity to make real choices and decisions in a business activity which has the added benefit of raising money for a good cause,” said Kate Whetter, education projects manager at Cornwall Education Business Partnership. “Key to the success of the day was the fantastic support from the local business community.”

Year five teacher Tracey Radley, said: “The Junior Enterprise Challenge Day has been such a great opportunity for the children to work in teams, showing ideas and planning together for a real purpose. They loved working with people from local business who were kind enough to share their time and expertise. The children have set themselves a really challenging target of buying two ShelterBoxes but I have no doubt that with their hard work and enthusiasm they will do it.”
