Police have launched a murder enquiry after a 20-year-old man who was assaulted in Redruth at the weekend died as a result of his injuries on Monday.

Two men were arrested on suspicion of assault occasioning actual bodily harm after the local man was found unconscious on the ground in the Chapel Street area by a member of the public at around 2.45am on Sunday, September 20.

The victim suffered serious head injuries and was taken by ambulance to the Royal Cornwall Hospital in Truro, before being transferred to Derriford Hospital, Plymouth.

Two 21-year-old men, from Redruth and Truro, who were were arrested shortly afterwards have now been arrested on suspicion of murder, and were taken into custody and remain at Camborne police station.

The man's family have been informed of his death and are being supported by specially trained officers.

Officers are carrying out house-to-house enquiries in the area and detectives from the Major Crime Investigation Team, who are leading the investigation, are appealing for witnesses to a disturbance outside The Zone nightclub on Chapel Street to get in touch.

Detective Chief Inspector Mike West, deputy head of Major Crime, said: “Offences like this are exceedingly rare in this area.

“We are not looking for anyone else in connection with the incident at this time.

“We would like to speak to anyone who witnessed a disturbance outside The Zone night club and anyone who was in the area between 2.30am and 3.30am on Sunday.”
