Camborne Town Council’s consultation about the future of the library service and Passmore Edwards building in Camborne will end on Friday.

The consultation is in response to Cornwall Council proposals that threaten the future of the library service at its current location.

Cornwall Council has invited expressions of interest from town and parish councils to deliver the library service locally so that it can "meet the required savings."

A letter from Geoff Brown, cabinet member for communities, states that "unfortunately, if we don’t receive sufficient interest we cannot rule out the possibility of some sites facing closure which is a position no-one wants to be in."

Leaflets which ask five key questions have been delivered to all households in the Camborne parish. The leaflet has a detachable form to return to the Council with no stamp required. The questions can also be completed on the Council’s website camborne-tc.gov.uk. Councillors will be manning a stall in the Camborne Produce Market on Friday to promote the consultation and hear local people’s views on Camborne library.

Mayor, Trevor Chalker said: "The future of the library building and service and Camborne Town Council’s role in it depends on your comments so please take this opportunity to have your say, it really does matter."

Amenities committee chairman Jacqueline Merrick said: "We know from our Camborne Town Council budget consultation at the beginning of 2015, that the library service is highly valued. However, we now require as many people as possible living in the Camborne Parish, to respond specifically to the consultation, on both the future of the library services and the Passmore Edwards building."

The town council has pledged to act on the results of the consultation but is mindful that it could take significant additional money to keep the library service at its current location. The consultation asks if people are willing to pay more on their council tax to achieve this.

The council hopes that Camborne residents will use this opportunity to make their views heard. More information can be obtained from your local Camborne town councillors or from the town clerk, Amanda Mugford. The results of the consultation will be reported to the full council meeting on November 12.
