Two students from Cornwall College Camborne are celebrating after securing a record deal with the Electronic Dance Music (EDM) Network which saw their first track, Higher, released on Monday.

Josh Richards, who wrote the track, said: “Music is something I’ve always been interested in and probably the only thing I’ve been good at. Even before this deal I was gigging a lot with bands playing pubs and clubs, but I got fed up with other members not turning up and so I wanted something else to do but still associated with music and production was it.”

Nineteen-year-old Josh from Camborne, who is in his final year of his HND in DJ and Electronic Music Production, posted on the internal dBs Music Facebook page that he was looking for someone to remix his track. Cameron Mussel came forward and it’s from there that the partnership was formed.

Cameron, from Mount Hawke, said: “At the moment there’s a really good UK sound which is very distinctive and one which I feel very at home with, whereas from 2010 to 2013 there was a lot of Americans taking on the EDM culture. To be honest it was an awful sound that was in my opinion just smashed out at a fast rate simply to make money.”

Cameron said he is delighted that they have secured a deal to release the track. He said: “The company are an independent network who run a number of online music channels; they have a real influence over online music so this is a massive start to our careers.”

After remixing Josh’s original track Cameron sent it to one of EDM’s promotional channels, just to get some airtime and to see if they liked it and that led to the record deal.

Cameron said: “I got into music when I was seven and started playing the guitar and piano at 12. This lasted throughout school and I knew I wanted to continue with music and everyone knows that if you want a serious qualification with excellent pedigree you need to come to dBs Music, as they really live up to what they teach and have great industry links.”
