There was another night of success for media students from Cornwall College Camborne, who won three awards at this year’s Cornwall Film Festival.

They picked up awards for best factual, best music video and current extended diploma media production student Kirsty Dexter won the Rising Star Award.

Team lead for digital media at Cornwall College Camborne, Rory Mason, said: “The standard of the competition in the Cornwall Film Festival is always tough, so it is a real credit to the students that they have walked away with three awards. I am absolutely thrilled.”

The Rising Star Award was sponsored by the Matthew Martino Benevolent Fund and as well as a cash prize of £150 and multiple DVD classics to add to her collection, Kirsty will now have an all-expenses paid ten-day trip to the capital to work alongside professional directors and film crew to develop her skills and talent, and give her career an extra boost.

Rory added: “This will be an amazing experience for Kirsty and one that will really help her to develop her skills, learning from some fantastic media professionals; it’s a real head start to her career in the media industry.”

Kirsty, 19 and from Camborne, added: “It’s crazy, I can’t believe I won. I’m so proud to have been selected from such a strong group of young film makers. I am going to use my prize money to fund my next film and hopefully raise its production quality.”

Last year the media students won praise from the Royal Television Society with the Film School production Cheese Dreams taking first place in the undergraduate comedy and entertainment category and beating third year university work from Plymouth and Falmouth Universities.

Rory said: “This makes 33 awards in the last 11 years for our students and it makes me feel very proud of all their hard work; this is a real demonstration of our commitment to making learning work.”
