Camborne School of Witchcraft and Wizardry

Magic was the order of the day recently when a group of Year 5 and 6 students visited Camborne Sci-ence and International Academy for a workshop like no other. The Witchcraft and Wizardry Super Saturday, held on the 21st November, saw 27 students from local primary schools visit the Academy for a day inspired by Hogwarts.

“Our Super Saturday programme enhances learning and gives young people the opportunity to experience subjects in very unique ways” said Susan Gellatly, Director of KS4 at CSIA. “What better way to inspire students about education than through magic and mysteries!?”

“Our young witches and wizards engaged in creative writing tasks, from writing spells to creating fantasy creatures” said Susan. “They also recalled when they first discovered that they had magical powers which saw such fantastic work, their imaginations were running wild!”

Armed with their parchment notebooks and other essential wizarding materials including their magical creatures and a sense of curiosity, students explored Creative Writing and Science through various, unusual activities.

“In the History of Magical Creatures lesson, students got the chance to create their own magical beasts which were outstanding with a delightful range of similes and adjectives” said Jenna Rogers-Macfarlane, English Teacher at CSIA. “Their diary entries were also very inventive, with many turning their siblings into an amusing array of creatures!”

Their imaginations expanded even further when the students were asked to create their own edible concoctions in a lesson in Potions with Dr Jo Foster, Director of STEM Academy. “Their creative juices ran riot and perhaps the most exciting part, was daring to try them!” said Jenna. “Professor Foster was exceptional and her skills clearly extend beyond the realms of Muggle scientists!”

The session saw 27 students from partner primary schools and beyond.

“Lessons in magic may not immediately spring to mind when you think of school, but we’re inspiring students to learn in exciting and captivating ways” added Principal at CSIA, Ian Kenworthy. “Super Saturdays present students with topics which capture their imaginations and incite new interests and passions. . .what a fantastic way to learn.”
