Almost 300 primary school children from partner schools of Camborne Science and International Academy took part in a specially themed Christmas sports event last month.

Hosted by CSIA, the event saw 270 youngsters from ten different local schools get active with various festive activities including throwing "snowballs" and jumping across "icebergs."

“What better way to mark the final week of term than with a bumper sporting event with a Christmas theme?” said Tamsin Hosking, PE teacher and primary sports alliance coordinator. “We held something similar last year but this year was even bigger and better.”

Held over two sessions in the morning and afternoon in the sports hall, the event was led by CSIA’s new year seven sports leaders, who have all taken part in the SLUK playground leader training in primary schools when they were in year six.

“We’re now working on developing their leadership skills as well as the students acting as role models for their previous schools,” said Tamsin. “This is hugely beneficial to their self confidence and it was fantastic to see them interact with the younger students. Our year sevens helped make the event a huge success and we’re very proud.”

The event saw various activity stations situated throughout the hall, such as throwing presents down the chimney and stealing gifts from under the Christmas tree. “Our activities were designed to help the students get active but in a way which was engaging, exciting and fun,” said Tamsin. “From developing throwing and aiming skills to working on movement and improving hand-eye coordination, the students were able to practice their sporting skills while having a great time.”

Favourite activities with students included pinning the nose on Rudolph to help with balance, a Santa obstacle course to develop agility and passing the hot Christmas pudding, focussing on catching and throwing.
