Duchy College Stoke Climsland has quarantined all the horses at its equestrian centre for at least a month following a case of a disease known as the strangles.
The equestrian centre at the college in south east Cornwall has been closed until further notice for events, hiring, and competitions, with no horses to be moved on or off site, after one of the horses was confirmed to have the respiratory infection Streptococcus equi var. equi.
The horse had been in the care of the college before going home for Christmas, and when it came back it had symptoms of the disease. Tests were run by a local vets and the horse was taken back by the owner and put in isolation.
On its Facebook page, Duchy College Equine Events wrote: "Currently no other horses at the centre have displayed any signs of the disease and are all under a strict quarantine programme as a precautionary action."
The disease has a 21 day incubation period, meaning the yard will be shut for four to six weeks to make sure no horses are infected.
