REDRUTH councillors Lisa Dolley and Mike Chappell have joined forces to oppose proposals by Coastline Housing to site a homeless hostel in the Green Lane area of the town.

The councillors are concerned that the proposed hostel is sited too close the town centre and local schools. Currently, the service is situated in Camborne where its presence has caused considerable upset to local residents.

Redruth town councillor Mike Chappell said, "I have enormous respect for Coastline who are rightly held in high regard but this move would represent a huge mistake on their part" "I am a great advocate of helping the less well off, the homeless and those in need. We need to do these things in the face of the extreme austerity measures being inflicted on Cornwall by the Government but this is the wrong setting for such a project. An increasing number of local residents are shocked to hear of this proposal. I will not be alone in calling on Coastline to identify a more suitable location."

Cornwall Councillor Lisa Dolley who has come under pressure from Coastline and senior officers at Cornwall Council is equally adamant that the proposed hostel is sited in the wrong place.

She said, "I am well aware of the need to provide care for the homeless but I will not be bullied into supporting a project that is clearly in the wrong place.

"I would support an out of town site or even one on the edge of town, but Green Lane is right in the middle Redruth, just around the corner from two schools. Local residents have been in touch to voice strong concerns over the project. I would urge Coastline to think again and come up with a more suitable location for the project."
