Murdoch Day is Redruth's big day and really gets right to the heart of what the town is all about – its heritage, history, industry, but most of all community. To be held on Saturday, June 18, the day celebrates pioneering inventor William Murdoch, who was the first to use gas lights indoors at his home in Cross Street.

Eight schools, two nurseries and two community groups from the area are due to take part in the well-supported morning procession which winds its way through the town’s streets from 10am. Alongside a full line-up of live music at the main stage in Green Lane, the town centre will also host a street market, “Olde Tyme Fair”, steam engines, classic cars, The Murdoch Flyer, art installations, exhibitions and community dance groups.

Back again this year is the afternoon dance, taking place at 3pm through Fore Street. Unique choreography and music which will be performed by Whippletree and Bagus Crowd; have been written especially for the occasion.

Organisations across the town are holding open days, sales, and activities, including St Andrews Church, the Cornwall Centre, the Methodist Church, Murdoch House and the Cornish Global Migration Programme.

Lara McShee, Redruth Community Projects Manager, said “Murdoch Day goes from strength to strength each year and we have the community that support the event to thank for this. We have something going on in every part of the town centre and I think we can all be proud of that.”

Newly appointed Town Mayor, Henry Biscoe, added "Murdoch Day is a celebration of Redruth's heritage and once again this will be a wonderful community day for the town. There is something for everyone: music, stalls, children’s entertainment and the wonderful schools' procession with all their art work, in fact all we need to complete a perfect day is fine weather! Each year this day gets bigger and better, reflecting the growing optimism we now have for our future with so many exciting plans for the old Brewery site in the pipeline. We hope everyone will come along on the 18th, join in and have a great time."
