A young writer from Truro High School has won first prize in the national final of the Young Writers’ Competition run by the Rotary Club.

Against nearly 4,000 entries from across the country, Ella Kyle, 14 from Camborne, took the top place in the national competition’s intermediate category which called on entrants to write imaginatively around the title Our World is Beautiful.

Nominated by the Rotary Club of Truro Boscawen, the judges praised her thoughtful, stunning and mature précis, showing wisdom beyond her years.

Ella’s fictional piece explores the beauty of the world from the everyday to the extraordinary through the photographs left behind by the main character’s late grandfather. Entirely created in the young author’s imagination, the short story celebrates the wondrous nature of life in all its forms.

Ella said: “I wanted create a collection of things which showed that beauty is all around us. I felt that the best way for the reader to see this was through the photos which a man had taken throughout his life showing both the good and bad sides of our world. I was quite surprised to have succeeded at such a high level but I’m so pleased that my ideas have struck a chord with people.”

As a result of her success, Ella’s work will now be published in national Rotary magazines alongside pieces by junior category winner Isabella Fleming from Cambridgeshire and senior category winner Lucy Jones from the West Midlands.

Ella was also presented with a trophy and cash prize by the President of Truro Boscawen Rotary, Robert Sturland.

The Rotary Club Young Writer’s competition offers talented young creatives the chance to develop their literary voice and share their imagination and creative flair with the public.
