Firefighters continue to battle a large blaze at a St Erth recycling yard which stopped trains and covered the local area in smoke last night.

The fire service said crews had been working hard throughout the night and remain on scene fighting the fire, which is is believed will be ongoing.

The Hayle bypass has now reopened after being closed all night and for much of this morning.

There are no train services between St Erth and Penzance or St Erth and St Ives, with Great Western Railway running replacement bus services, and tickets accepted on First Kernow Bus services 14,17 and 18.

FROM LAST NIGHT: A plume of black smoke covers much of West Cornwall tonight as firefighters battle a massive blaze at St Erth.

Smoke is reported to have reached as far as Porthleven as Mullion as fire crews from across the county try to bring the flames under control at St Erth's recycling centre next to the train station.

Residents in that area are being told to stay indoors and keep their windows shut as the acrid smoke fills the air.

A large amount of tyres are thought to be at the centre of the blaze and explosions have also been heard.
