A Camborne teenager in recovery from cancer has taken part in a confidence-building sailing trip around the Solent.

Wojtek Sacharczuk, 13, joined the Ellen MacArthur Cancer Trust, along with 28 other young people in recovery from cancer.

Wojtek, who finished cancer treatment in 2007 for Acute Lymphoblastic Leukaemia at Royal Cornwall Hospital joined the crew of one of six yachts on his first ever time sailing, as they circumnavigated the Solent for four days.

He said: "It was fun meeting all the other young people on the trip".

Sailing onboard 42-48 foot cruising yachts, the trust's trips provide a chance for the young people to test themselves in a safe and supportive environment, encouraging them to work as a team and get involved in everything from helming the boat to cooking.

Wojtek added: "It was fun. I learnt to cook, sail and my favourite bit was driving the boat".

Departing from East Cowes Marina, Isle of Wight, the trip took the crews to various stopovers including Yarmouth Harbour and the picturesque bay of Newtown Creek for a BBQ. They then put their new skills to the test and cruised back to Cowes.

Launched in 2003, the aim of the Ellen MacArthur Cancer Trust is to give young people in recovery from cancer the chance to rebuild their confidence through sailing.

Dame Ellen, who tries to spend a day on as many trips as possible, said: "The mental and social fall-out from cancer can be just as devastating as the physical illness. Everything we do is about building confidence, self-esteem and having fun together."

Now in its 13th year, the trust has grown into a national charity, taking young people aged between eight and 24 who are recovering from cancer on four-day sailing trips.
