Three wise hens sun themselves after being saved from slaughter Three lucky hens saved from slaughter by the British Hen Welfare Trust have been making the most of their free range retirement in the sun.

Fanny, Gloria and June were adopted from one of the charity’s re-homing points at 18 months old.

They were due to go to slaughter but were three of the lucky ones re-homed by the British Hen Welfare Trust, which has another re-homing date coming up in Redruth in Cornwall on Sunday, 9 October.

There will be hundreds of hens looking for their retirement homes on that date, and anyone able to re-home some is urged to call the charity as soon as possible.

Jane Howorth MBE, charity Founder, said: “With the summer hols long gone, now is the perfect time to adopt some of our lovely hens so they can enjoy some autumn sunshine while they adapt to free range life. If you haven’t tried keeping hens, you have no idea what you’re missing out on! Please pick up the phone and book as soon as possible.

“Our girls make wonderful pets – they’re inquisitive, endearing and so soft to stroke – and you get the best eggs as a bonus! Hens like Fanny, Gloria and June would be going straight to the slaughterhouse if it were not for kind people giving them loving homes. Adopting some hens is ‘life enriching’ – a phrase used by many of our supporters.”

If you can give a hen a happy home all you need to do is make sure you register on the BHWT’s website at www.bhwt.org.uk and then call 01884 860084.
