Redruth based radio presenter and entertainer Freddy Zapp turned his Christmas lights switch on at his home in Dopps Terrace into a civic occasion on Sunday evening.

The town's mayor Henry Biscoe and his deputy Deborah Reeve, as well as the town crier George Saint and even the chairman of the chamber of commerce, Manny Hernandez, turned out for the occasion.

Despite the drizzling rain, BBC Radio Cornwall presenter Matthew Shepherd turned on the festive lights on the terraced houses which Freddy and his neighbour Simon Burge have decorated.

As members of Redruth Town Band played Christmas carols, Freddy and his partner Kaye Bottono served mulled wine and mince pies to the crowd of over 40 local residents who turned out on a cold wet night to share the festivities.

Freddy, who made all the lights himself using many metres of light rope and over 10,000 cable ties, said he liked to "give something back to the community and what better way was there than celebrate the Christmas season?”
