Camborne 33 - Newport 38

Camborne went down to a narrow defeat in an entertaining 11 try end of season thriller against Newport at the Recreation Ground, writes Martin Symons.

In front of another big crowd ‘Town’ could not snatch victory late on but the two losing bonus points gained duly ensured the local bragging rights as they will end above rivals Redruth comfortably mid table on a most satisfactory return to the National Leagues.

The Cherry & Whites went 14-0 up early on after a catch and drive try from hooker Ben Priddey quickly followed by a solo run in from skipper Jordan Rose. Jordan Sidwell added the extras to both scores.

Though the visitors countered with an unconverted touchdown prop Jon Drew then powered over on 22 minutes making the score 19-5.

Again Newport hit back with a try but as the interval neared a superb break and offload by AJ King sent Harry Larkins galloping over for fly half Sidwell to convert.

Crucially there was still time for the visitors to hit back with a last act converted effort that saw the home side’s lead reduced to 26-17 at the break.

Coming out for the second period with the advantage of the slope Newport belied their League position by taking the game to Camborne deservedly profiting from defensive lapses to bag a brace of converted tries taking the lead at 26-31.

An excellent converted score followed midway through the half giving the Cherry & Whites a mountain to climb trailing by 12 points.

With ten minutes left a powerful surge at a close range scrum allowed Adam Hughes to touchdown and centre King’s angled conversion cut the deficit further at 33-38.

Late on the running of full back Larkins and the industry of all action flanker Jordan Nicholls created opportunities to take the win but Camborne came up agonisingly short.
