Youth information and advice service wins plaudits

Share, the Information, Advice and Support service for young people in Cornwall had been awarded two quality marks for the high standards of its work following two inspections.

The first quality mark was awarded in January this year by the Community Legal Service. This recognises the level of independent legal information, advice and support offered by Share.

The assessment said that young people could be assured of receiving a free, confidential service based on meeting their needs and could depend on staff to provide accurate information on benefits, employment rights, debt, health, housing and homelessness.

The inspectors also praised the way Share listens to young people’s views about the service and then responds positively to these.

‘These awards are recognition of the commitment and passion demonstrated by SHARE workers and Cornwall Youth Services generally” said Bernie Doyle, from the Supporting Families service. “Their belief in young people is reflected through their hard work, commitment and dedication to support young people in Cornwall to achieve the best outcomes.’ Share has also been awarded the Matrix Standard in recognition of the high quality of information, advice and guidance it delivers to young people. Highlighting the way that the service meets the needs of young people, the inspectors also praised staff for their positive use and commitment to volunteers.

Neil Burden, portfolio holder for children’s services: “Even when we are older in years we still need to seek advice from people we can trust “he said. “However in our formative years seeking guidance and support is far more daunting so for SHARE to be available for our young people in Cornwall and now given such accolades by these two inspections gives both our young people and our SHARE workers confidence that much of what is being delivered is of a high standard and the advice appropriate to the situation. “ Share has local offices based in Young People’s Centres in Penzance, Camborne, Truro, Newquay, St Austell and Bodmin. There are also Share outreach services in Helston, Bude, Callington and Launceston.
