Student invited onto council committee
A Duchy College student is in talks with councillors about creating a new nature reserve.
Mel Broomhead, who is studying a foundation degree in Conservation and Countryside Management at the Camborne-based Duchy College Rosewarne, part of Cornwall College, approached Newquay town council proposing a nature reserve as part of her 'Habitat Management' assignment.
Mel proposed that the Gannel Estuary near Newquay be designated a Local Nature Reserve.
As no conservation plans currently exist in the Gannel Estuary area, the council was delighted with the idea and has invited Mel to sit on committee meetings.
Mel said: "It is a fantastic opportunity to be on the committee and use valuable techniques in my conservation course."
John Latham, principle of Cornwall College, said: "This is fantastic news for Mel and is a testament to her hard work and the teaching of our staff at Duchy College."
