FORMER docks workers were waited on by directors and managers of A&P Falmouth at the company’s annual pensioners’ Christmas dinner on Friday evening.

More than 130 retirees from Falmouth Docks sat down to a traditional, two-course Christmas meal of roast turkey and Christmas pudding, followed by coffee and mince pies, all washed down with some “Christmas cheer” at Falmouth Community School.

The event, organised by Yolanda Tonkin, gave the invited guests a chance to catch up with former workmates. A Christmas tradition for the past 30 years, it also offered senior management at the docks a chance to show their appreciation of the work done and loyalty shown by former employees.

Paul Kneebone, human resources manager of A&P Falmouth, said: “The event has become a Christmas tradition and one which we all look forward to. It signals the start of the festive season for many and gives us a chance to catch up with old friends and colleagues. There is always plenty to reminisce about.”

Peter Child, A&P Falmouth’s managing director, gave his annual report, reflecting on another profitable year for the company, and thanked his management team for their hard work. Appreciation was also expressed for the work of the trade unions who, with the company, have agreed significant changes to terms and conditions. However, it was the news that A&P will be recruiting apprentices in the coming year that received unanimous approval from the retired workers.

The pensioners’ return of thanks was given by retired boilermaker George Ross, before a quiet moment of reflection to remember former colleagues who had died.

Kitchen staff at Falmouth School were presented with bottles of wine and thanked for the excellent meal before a raffle of prizes, generously donated by A&P’s suppliers, rounded off the evening.
