A former DJ who suffered a heart attack while walking along the Lizard cliffs held a music event on Saturday to raise awareness for unexpected heart attacks in seemingly perfectly healthy people.
Kay decided to hold a music event called Heart Beats Music Festival as an event of awareness for heart attacks, three years after she suffered from one herself and was “more than delighted” with how the day turned out.
The event was held at the Blue Anchor in Helston on Sunday between 2pm and 11am. There were two stages set up with 11 bands playing all together.
The day consisted of live music from local bands, food, drinks and the large amount of people who attended all having a very enjoyable day.
Kay said: “I am more than delighted with the turnout. I have had amazing feedback and the day was better than I could have ever imagined.
“There were no technical hitches and the atmosphere was amazing. I am extremely grateful to everyone who came and showed their support and awareness.”
More than £2,500 was collected and Kay said she was “overwhelmed with how much money was raised” for both her charities.
Kay has given a “huge thank you” to all that made the day as special as it was.
This included the performers – Cover Up, No Apologies, Ocean Fever, Best Served Chilled, Midlife Crysis, Thrawd Together, Not The Beatles, BT Experience, Small Wonder, The Roosters and Rudi’s Message – plus Gerry Gunn of Midlife Crysis and Phil Greet of Nightchasers Disco for supplying the sound and DJ equipment for the lower stage, and Derek Cormack of the Roosters who supplied the sound for the upper stage. Kevin Mashembo of Ocean Fever supplied guitars amps and drums.
She thanked her friend Graham Baumbach for helping organise the event along with Phil Greet, Camborne College for printing the posters, all the helpers on the day, Helston’s British Heart Foundation shop and B’Gorgeous for selling cakes and raffle tickets.
Kay added “grateful thanks” to all the businesses that donated to the raffle: B’Gorgeous, Chough Brewery, Donna’s Hair Studio, Flowers by Clowance, Henlys restaurant, Sainsbury, Skinners Brewery, St Austell Brewery, St Michael’s Hotel Falmouth, Tesco, The Beauty Retreat, The Mullion Cove Hotel and TML Berryman and Sons.
“Finally thanks to Simon, Kim and all the crew at the Blue Anchor for their help in making the day so successful and special and to everyone who attended and supported the event,” said Kay.
The devastating heart attack that Kay suffered took place three years ago while walking along the Lizard cliffs on her own.
It was unexpected and at the time she just thought it was an asthma attack.
However, once she got to the hospital, she received the devastating news that she had a heart attack – despite being a healthy and fit person who had never smoked.
