A fun run loving nun from Falmouth who has been raising money for various charities for 30 years has handed over a cheque for £350 to the Falmouth Support Group for Cornwall Hospice Care.

Sister Augustine, of the Order of Les Filles De La Croix which is now based in Woodlane, has taken part in the Dorchester Lions Club fun run for the past three decades, and even though she is now in her 70s, she has no intention of retiring from the event and has already chosen her charities for next year.

“I just love it,” she said. “I still get excited about it. It is a fun run and it really is fun although I do walk because I cannot really run.”

Sister Augustine lived and taught in Dorchester for 30 years until she moved to the convent at Tremough in 1996. She and the rest of the Order moved to Falmouth a few years later when the site was sold and later became the Penryn campus housing Falmouth and Exeter universities.

“I just have to go back there (to Dorchester) and do the fun run every year,” said Sister Augustine. “I am really interested in fundraising and have won awards for having the highest sponsorship.”

This year Sister Augustine completed the 1.2 kilometre course and raised a total of £1,100.

In addition to Cornwall Hospice Care’s donation, she also gave Dorchester Lions Club £550 and the rest went to the Poverty Action Group.

Last year she presented the Falmouth and Penryn Foodbank with £250 and next year her local charity will be the Apostleship of the Sea, which has strong links with St Mary’s Church in Falmouth.

Sister Augustine is well known to the congregation at St Mary’s Church, from whom she receives a lot of support, and also to the residents of Simon House in Trevethan Road where she volunteers.

In addition, Sister Augustine is also a teaching assistant at St Michael’s School in Camborne.
