A fishing vessel taking on water was rescued by Falmouth all-weather lifeboat this morning after fears it may sink.
The crew was paged by the coastguard this morning at 6:25am to go to the assistance of the 11 meter fishing boat Morel Margh some 3 miles to the south east of Anthony Light. She had reported a leak in her engine room and feared she might sink.
The all-weather lifeboat left its pontoon at 6:35 and arrived at the stricken fishing vessel by 6:54 am. Two members of the lifeboat’s crew were put on board the fishing boat, together with a portable salvage pump, to try and stem the ingress of water.
The water leak was quickly traced to a failed fitting on the cooler for the gearbox.
The rest of the lifeboat’s crew set to work on getting a tow line ready to tow the vessel into the safety of Falmouth Harbour and by 8:54am the fishing vessel was being tied up safely alongside the Fal Fish wharf in the dockyard.
The lifeboat was released shortly after and returned to its pontoon berth arriving at 9:10. After a wash down and refuel the Richard Cox Scot was ready for service again by 9:30 am.
The weather on this service was excellent with only a slight swell and good visibility.
Manning the lifeboat were: John Blakeston (Coxswain); Derren Plaister; Tom Telford; Adam West; Jonathan Hackwell; Andy Jenkins and Neil Capper.
