The Falmouth Tall Ships Regatta is just four weeks away and with tens of thousands of people expected to flock to the town an appeal has gone out for the last of the volunteers who will help visitors get the most out of the four day event.

Although most of the volunteers needed have already been signed up, there is still a chance for another 30 or so people to get involved and be at the centre of all the action.

“The opportunities that we have for volunteers will be right at the heart of the event, helping to direct visitors when they arrive, providing information about the regatta activities, event evaluation and assisting with visitor safety,” said Sian Robbins of Visit Cornwall.

“Each shift is just a few hours, enabling people to volunteer for a one-off shift or on each day of the regatta. Volunteers will get plenty of time to take part in the event and soak up the atmosphere.”

Anyone interested in volunteering for the 2014 Tall Ships Regatta should contact Lorna Jones at Volunteer Cornwall who will be able to provide more information. Her contacts are 01872 241401, email mid@volunteercornwall.org.uk or you can follow the link http://www.volunteercornwall.org.uk/tall-ships-regatta-2014/.

The regatta takes place from August 28 to 31 when 47 sail training vessels of all sizes from around the world will be in Falmouth with the larger A-class ships moored alongside Duchy and County Wharves at the docks and open to the public from the Thursday until Saturday.

In addition to the spectacle of the ships themselves, there will also be a full programme of entertainment and activities taking place throughout the town with entertainment centres based within the docks, on Church Street car park and the main one at Events Square.

There will also be activities and events held on The Moor, including a 15ft helter skelter; a farmers' market on Custom House Quay and more at Pendennis Castle, The Poly, Falmouth Art Gallery, the Maritime Museum, Gyllyngvase Beach, the Falmouth Hotel and a firework display over Carrick Roads.

The final day of the regatta is race day when ships will leave Falmouth in a parade of sail, making their way to the start line off Falmouth Bay. The ships will pass between Pendennis and St Mawes Castles before crossing Falmouth Bay and then racing to the Isle of Wight before cruising up to London and the finish port of Royal Greenwich.
