Scarecrows have been dotted throughout Mullion over the last week for what has been described as “the best ever” Scarecrow Festival.

Held annually in aid of Mullion Methodist Chapel, it involves a number of themed activities.

They included a scarecrow parade to launch the event, in which children and their families dress up in tatty clothes and plenty of straw to parade through the village.

There has also been the popular scarecrow trail, this year featuring 66 displays made by businesses and individual.

Each one depicted the 2014 theme of “proper job”, with a variety of professions on display.

Visitors were challenged to name each job on a trail sheet, with the correctly completed forms entered into a prize draw at the end.

This year saw people travelling from as far afield as Bodmin and St Austell to take part.

Organiser Pauline Rowse said: “We have had the most wonderful week – the best ever we think.”

The festivities also featured a concert in the chapel, with the Pentyr Singers.

Mrs Rowse added that this year there had been a good amount of sponsorship, with 40 businesses giving money and a grant coming from Mullion’s Cornwall Councillor Carolyn Rule, which went towards the cost of publicity and printing the trail sheets and posters.

The choir concert was sponsored by Glenn Humphries Landscaping Ltd.

Although the amount raised for the chapel is not yet know, Mrs Rowse believed |it to be a successful year. The money goes towards keeping the chapel open and running, not just for weekly services but for community groups also, from the parish council through to the village mother and toddler group.

Mrs Rowse thanked all the sponsors and the team of helpers that ran the event, with the food team led by Rosemary Bray; they served coffees and lunches throughout the week at the chapel.
