Helston Harvest Fair saw strong support this year with a rise in entries in almost every event, with a highlight being the fabulous fancy dress for the carnival parade.

Community groups, families and individuals lined up at Helston Football Club for judging in the carnival.

There were more floats than in previous years and also a good number of walkers, with a strong standard of costume.

It was up to BBC Spotlight news reader Rebecca Wills, her mum Pauline Wills, who used to own a greengrocers’ shop in the town, and carnival queen and king Daisy and Michael to select the winners, before all the entrants paraded to the bottom of town and back up through the streets.

Also included in the overall harvest fair weekend was the Helston in Bloom competition and a show window display competition for traders, which was won by the Cornwall Air Ambulance shop, with the Dog House pet shop and groom service in second place and the new Fishermen’s Mission charity shop in third.

Carnival results Best pub float, Blue Anchor; best large float, Flying Start Nursery; best small float, ‘Alice in Wonderland’; best group walkers, Helston Badgers of the St John Ambulance; best individual walker, Kathryn Mitchell and daughter
