Travellers that have set up camp in a Falmouth car park have been asked to leave.

The group arrived in the Quarry Car Park off Quarry Hill on Sunday.

A Cornwall Council spokesman said that the group had already been asked to leave, and that they were monitoring the situation.

Adding: "The council is required to achieve a balance between respecting the rights of the settled community and the rights of gypsies and travellers. Evictions and enforcement decisions made by the Council must be proportionate and lawful.

"In making decisions with regard to the eviction or acceptance of any particular unauthorised encampment, the Council must assess the relative weight given to the Council responsibilities and duties towards Gypsies and other Travellers in terms of education, children and homelessness legislation.

"The site has been visited by the Gypsy and Traveller liaison officer who has asked the group to leave the site. We are currently monitoring the situation."
