The people of Falmouth are being encouraged to record their own festive message to the 360 crew of the RFA Argus, who will be spending Christmas in Africa helping in the fight against Ebola.

Thousands lined quaysides and cliff-tops to wave off the medical ship as she left her home port of Falmouth last month en route to Sierra Leone, where she is now assisting in the fight against the deadly disease.

Now, a campaign spearheaded by Falmouth’s MP Sarah Newton, and supported by A&P Falmouth and Falmouth University will see a video entitled Happy Christmas RFA Argus, Love Falmouth, created, but input from local businesses, organisations and residents is needed.

The idea is to send a short video message full of good wishes from the local community to those on board the RFA Argus this Christmas.

Mrs Newton said: “I am delighted that A&P and Falmouth University have come together, enabling the making of a Christmas message for the crew of RFA Argus.

“We are all very proud of her crew and the vital work they do.

“I hope as many local organisations as possible will get involved so we wish can them a Happy Christmas in the true Falmouth style.”

Peter Child, managing director of A&P Falmouth, added: “We know how difficult it is being away from home and loved ones at Christmas. Those on board RFA Argus have a vital job to do and we want to take this opportunity to show them just how grateful we are.

“As its home port, Falmouth has long-standing relations with the RFA Argus and we hope the whole town will get behind us and help send a little bit of home to the ship this festive season.”

The team behind the video, which will be released on YouTube the week before Christmas, are appealing for local organisations, schools and businesses to get involved by recording their own brief messages or taking photos to be included in the video.

Suggestions include musical tributes, fancy dress or holding up homemade signs and cards.

Mrs Newton will be recording her own video tribute and A&P Falmouth is planning a suitably jolly missive.

Mr Child said: “Why not record a message during school assembly or take a photo of your sports team or business sending Christmas wishes?

“It can be poignant, humorous or celebratory – it really is up to you.

“It only takes five minutes and every single message will be a reminder to those on board the RFA Argus of how much we appreciate what they are doing. Please get involved.”

A book of Christmas messages has been opened by Falmouth Town Council, and is available in the library, for anyone who would like to send a greeting.

Videos and photos should be sent to sarah.newton.mp@parliament.uk. The deadline for submissions is Monday, December 8.

Messages can also be left on the Facebook page, Happy Christmas RFA Argus, Love Falmouth.
