A "small number of irresponsible people who spoil the environment for everyone" are the target of a push to clean up the highways and byways of Camborne.

Cornwall Councillor Paul White is asking residents in Camborne to help him clean up the towns and villages in the parish after becoming "fed up" with the problem.

Paul says that catching the small number of irresponsible people who spoil the environment for everyone. is key to stopping the blight and is working with Cornwall Council’s Community Protection team to put a stop to dog fouling and littering.

Paul said: "Officers from the Community Protection team Service are authorised to serve Fixed Penalty Notices on anyone seen littering or allowing their dog to foul in any open space. It is not always possible for officers to witness incidences of littering or fouling and therefore I need everyone Camborne to help. I am fed up with seeing dogs mess and litter and it’s time to do something about it. I can help if people help me to catch the culprits.

"There are a small number of people in Camborne that are currently under investigation for putting their rubbish out too early and for failing to pick up their dog’s mess.

"Residents who have received an S46 notice should realise that this is their final warning before a fixed penalty notice is served. Members of the public can report incidents of littering and fouling that they have seen to the team on 0300 1234 212. In order for the team to serve a Fixed Penalty Notice a witness statement and certain information will be needed.

"If the person littering or allowing their dog to foul is known to the witness then the name and address of the offender must be supplied. If the name or address is not known then information including any car registration should be supplied in order that the team can further investigate.

"Key facts including the sex of the person, approximate age, hair colour, height, clothes worn, where the incident occurred, what was dropped (if litter), what kind of dog fouled, date and time etc. will be required in order for the team to take further action.

"Should the accused offender not accept the accusation or not pay a Fixed Penalty Notice fine then the case may be heard in a Magistrates Court and the person supplying us with the witness statement may be required to act as a witness for the council."

Mr White is inviting anyone interested in becoming a volunteer Community Warden to phone 07793880202 or e-mail pwhite@cornwall.gov.uk. Training can be provided.
