Campaigners who want to reduce fatalities by cutting speeds on the A39 near Treluswell have seen 2,000 signatures added to their online petition in just two days.

The petition, which calls on Cornwall Council to increase safety on the road near Barras Moor by lowering speed limits, introducing speed cameras, and removing the overtaking lane, has amassed 2,176 supporters since Monday.

A paper copy of the petition has collected over 400 signatures over the last two to three months at the Olive Grove Bistro, which is accessed from the layby at Barras Moor.

Scott Sutherland, the Bistro owner, called the road dangerous and said: "There are concerns with safety.

"The overtaking lane is pointless. In this day and age vehicles don't have problems going uphill, then you get around the corner and vehicles are stacking up."

The layby was the scene of the crash which claimed the life of young Falmouth man Matt Hodges.

Stacey Sheppard, who set up the online petition, wrote: "Over the last few years, the A39, Treluswell -Devoran road has sadly seen a high volume of accidents and incidents that have very sadly resulted in a high percentage of fatalities and serious injuries.

"We are asking people to support the petition in order to force Cornwall Council to spend the time and money on a few improvements on this stretch of the A39 in order to make it safer for road users and people living alongside the road.

"After supporting this campaign myself, and two very sad accidents in one week, I would like to make this online for ease of supporters. Please show your support, sign and share."
