Campaigners against the development of Penryn’s College Valley have vowed to keep fighting after the town council confirmed its support for housing on the site.

At a meeting on Monday evening, all but two of the councillors voted for a new motion that would still see land at College Valley prioritised for future development, but without four northern fields on the lower slopes of the valley, between College Hill and the railway line.

Councillor David Garwood, seconded by Councillor Beverly Hulme, proposed an amendment to totally revoke the choice of College Valley and instead prioritise a site near Treluswell.

Councillor Garwood’s amendment was defeated, and he and Councillor Hulme were the only two councillors not to vote for the prioritisation of the College Valley site without the four northern fields.

Andrew Clappison, one of the organisers of a petition to protect the valley, said: “It does not feel like the council truly heard the community - it's sad that this representative body is not listening to the people they serve.”

Pip Carlton-Barnes, of Glasney Green Space Regeneration Project, added: “The GGSRP will continue their campaign by asking Cornwall Council to remove this valuable site from the allocations list.”
