An appeal for donations to fund the restoration of the iconic carving which had stood at the entrance to St George’s Arcade in Falmouth until vandalised a decade ago, has made an “excellent start” with half the money needed already pledged.

Falmouth Civic Society launched the appeal through the Packet in early December when it was said that around £2,000 was required.

The wooden relief of St George and the dragon had been damaged when it was pulled down by a drunken student in 2005.

It had been a feature of the front of the arcade in Church Street since the former cinema was built in 1912. It had survived bombing during World War Two and a fire in 1948, but now lies in a dilapidated state awaiting repair.

Amongst the generous donations already received, is one from a grandson of the founder of the arcade, another from estate agents Heather and Lay, one from a couple in Bristol on behalf of their grandchildren who live in Falmouth, and many others from local residents.

“The remains of the carving are already with the restorer, Gary Springfield,” said Falmouth Civic Society’s secretary, Angela Beale. “A final push is needed to get the final amount.”

Individuals donating £50 or more will be rewarded by seeing their name on a plaque placed near the entrance to the arcade, with a similar offer for companies which donate £100 or more. For those who cannot afford such sums, but would still like to make a donation, there are collecting boxes in the shops within the arcade.
