It was another successful year for Devoran Spring Flower Show held in the village hall.

Vicar of Devoran, the Rev Margaret Saville, opened the show this year, saying that it was the first event to herald the coming spring and was a classic community occasion, with so many people involved – especially the children of the village.

She also presented the cups and prizes and was thanked by show chairman John Charlton.

In the flower section there was a strong showing of camellias and daffodils and this despite a delay in the start of the growing season. Nearly every class in the schedule had entries which was very encouraging.

During the afternoon many visitors commented on the high standard of entries and what a delightful village event it was. The children’s section was extremely |well supported, with the “marine” themed sea creature made from fruit and |vegetables drawing the largest entry across the age groups.

The show also offered a cup this year for children’s cookery, as organisers find that the children often compete in the adult classes as well, giving a creditable account of themselves. Mrs Wilson said: “The cookery, handicraft and photography classes were also very well supported, with entries well up to their usual high standard.

“This year we had several new exhibitors; it was good to meet them and I do hope |they had a successful afternoon and enjoyed the show.”

Devoran School and Pre-school submitted written work and artwork, with Mrs Wilson thanking them for their contribution saying it was “always of such a high calibre and we thank them for their contribution.”

Alongside the display of exhibits the committee ran an adult and a children’s raffle, a plant stall and teas. Money raised is returned to the show funds.

Mrs Wilson said: “A big thank you, as always, to all the local firms who loyally support the raffle year on year with prizes, we are so grateful for your generosity.

“Thank you too to everyone who helped with the show in whatever capacity, we could not do it without you. We hope to see you all again in March 2016.”

She added, however, that the show did need to recruit new helpers to give a hand running it, as several of the committee were in their 80s.

“Fresh faces are needed if the show is to continue to run into the future. It would be such a shame if we could no longer continue,” she said.
