A workman who was killed when a dumper truck overturned in Coverack will be remembered with a book swap and fundraiser in the village this weekend.

Expectant father John Sweeney, 45, was killed last Thursday at a works site in the north corner car park while installing BT Openreach fibre optic cables.

Now the village residents will be showing their support for his pregnant widow and one child by raising funds with an event on Saturday.

Deryl Dart, the event organiser, said: "A lot of people are very, very shocked and they wanted to show that."

Although she did not know Mr Sweeney personally, she said workmen had been working outside her house for several days, and the group had been in the village for "quite a few weeks," and "people clearly knew of him."

She added: "We want to express our shock and sorrow, and try to do something to make a positive gesture."

Mr Sweeney, from County Donegal in Ireland, was one of a group of workmen who had come to Coverack with Dublin based KN Network Services on a contract with BT.

A police spokesperson said police were called to the scene of the incident at 5.55pm, and a 45 year old man was pronounced dead at the scene.

Next of kin were informed, and police from the serious collisions unit are investigating, as is the Health and Safety Executive.

The book swap and tea will be held in St Peter's Church Hall on Saturday, June 27, from 2 to 4pm.
